Originally posted by:Wars in America is my favorite AGEod game because of the time period, the relatively simple mechanics, and the large number of scenarios. Note that you need to upgrade it to version 1.10e QF2, and there are instructions on the AGEod forums for how to do so.On Steam, the best place to start, I think, is Alea Jacta Est. It also has lots of scenarios, many in the DLC, and relatively simple rules.
Many thanks, Brojoe.I managed to get a few steam titles on sale at Bundlestars/fanatical yesterday that had been on my wishlist for a while, namely Pike and Shot campaigns and Civil War 2.I also purchased Wars in America 2 from the ageod site for £11 (Bargain).I have to agree that this time period is very interesting. WIA2 also has a full 7-year war (French & Indian war) campaign which is just what I wanted:)Will check out Alea Jacta Est as you suggested also.I did not get the chance to try any of these games last night but will start with WIA2 this eve.I also started to read 'The blooding of Jack Absolute' a novel that features the French & Indian war. I like to get into the groove when I play historical games by reading and watching documentaries lol.I am also planning to read Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper, which was written in 1826 and is also part of a series of books.Could you recommend any good youtube wargamers that do a good series on WIA2 for total noobs? Personally I'd start with this one or non-steam game AGEOD's English Civil War. I always come back to this one and can't get into the others due to their huge size and unforgiving gameplay.

Strategic treatment of the Franco Prussian War with 12 two-weeks turn, a point-to-point map and an easy to play system for movement and combat (with tons of dice rolling on the way). Similar to GDW's A House Divided, with rules for the Paris Commune, battlefield promotions, cavalry screening, siege combat and surrenders. It's a DTP wargame with a 4A4 full color map and 192 full counters.
I have won this game but it took me many many attempts. The advantage of this game: It starts very small with only a few armies and a local region, and expands out over time. It teaches you weather and supply (often with the harshest of lessons!).
The command and control structure is much simpler, with no Corps. The graphics are the latest, better/clearer interface, nice clear card selection options.
This game has more in depth tutorials on more elements of the game. I just tried Rise of Prussia tutorials and it misses out key elements of the game that you need to play. If you buy this, play the tutorials and combine with reading the manual, I think that's a good option! Or get the English Civil War from AGEOD's site.
I have many of the AGEOD games but I always return to this as it's my favourite of the bunch (but I'm bias towards Pike and Shot games and games which start small and develop over time - I cant easily handle getting thrust into a huge game with many men stationed in 10's of locations, which Alea/Rise of Prussia and others can do). Very useful comment. Will restart with TYW, as suggested. And soon, if I manage to finish one solo game, will want to PBEM it. And I'll keep larger games like WON, CW2 and the rest, for later! Thanks man, your comment was def useful.
